Our opera pumps for men are made to order for black tie, white tie and every evening in between. Choose patent leather or velvet, then the trim, lining and sole colour, and add your initials for a pair that is entirely yours.
What are opera pumps?
Opera pumps are the most formal shoe a man can wear: a low, slip-on evening shoe, traditionally in black patent leather and often finished with a grosgrain bow. They are the classic partner for white tie and a refined choice for black tie. Our evening slippers follow the same idea, with a low cut, black patent leather or velvet and a grosgrain trim, made individually for you.

Opera pumps or tuxedo slippers?
The names overlap. Opera pumps usually means the patent leather evening shoe, while tuxedo slippers usually means the velvet version worn with a dinner suit. Both are correct with black tie. Our Black Tie Slipper is our patent version, and our velvet evening styles are the tuxedo slipper. For more velvet designs, see our men’s velvet slippers.
Make them your own
- Upper: black patent leather, or velvet in black, navy or a colour you choose
- Trim: a grosgrain trim, black for tradition or a colour of your choice
- Lining and sole: red, or any colour that only you know is there
- Initials: embossed on the sole for a private finishing touch
How to wear opera pumps
- White tie: black patent leather is the traditional choice with a tailcoat.
- Black tie: patent leather or velvet with a dinner suit, with black silk socks.
- Evening parties: a velvet slipper with an embroidered motif, such as The Rake or Secret Agent, for a little more personality.
Why choose our opera pumps?
Off the shelf evening shoes come in one colour and one finish. Ours are made to order, so you choose the lining, the trim and the sole, and the shoe fits the occasion and your style rather than a shop’s stock. The Continental, our Belgian loafer in patent leather and navy velvet, can be matched to a velvet or smoking jacket, and the Oxford Mark in patent leather gives you a laced alternative with a Goodyear welted sole.
Because evening shoes are worn only a few times a year, they should last for years. Each pair is lined in leather and made with care in Spain.
Caring for patent leather and velvet
Wipe patent leather with a soft, dry cloth after wearing to remove marks, and store your shoes with shoe trees, away from direct heat, so the finish stays bright. Brush velvet styles gently in the direction of the pile, and keep them away from heavy rain.
